A couple days ago I read a proverbs which says,
“If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept criticism you will be honored.” Proverbs 13:18
I first need to point out that being criticized is never fun and always hurts in some form. But like this Proverbs says we cannot ignore it. We must deal with the criticism or message which is being shared about us or the organization we associate with.
I think we often handle criticism wrongly (I know I have), by focusing on the person criticizing instead of the message which is being shared. Most of the time criticism is communicated negatively but there is almost always truth in it. Finding that truth only comes if we focus on the message or criticism instead of the person.
Focusing on the person could cause you to become bitter, negative, and confrontational toward the person. If you ignore the criticism you will end in “poverty” and “disgrace”.
But if you focus on what is being said you have the opportunity to grow and change yourself and your organization, which will bring “honor” and wisdom. The next time you are criticized focus on the truth of what is being said and not the person.
Question: What has helped you to focus on the message instead of the person when being criticized?
