I love the simplicity of Thomas Edison “There’s a way to do it better – find it!” I guess he did often find it! It seems to me that its often much easier to just be stuck in the same old rut. It takes energy to think and be creative but in the end that energy is well used if it gets you out of the rut!

    • Larry Poole

Caleb, I think that was my favorite one as well.

      • Dan Black

That’s one of my favorites as well.

    • Dan Black

Great thoughts, Caleb! Thank you for taking the time to share.

I love quotes and these are good ones. The best one that pops into my mind is the first one, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…”

    • Ngina Otiende

      Great one Floyd!

    • Dan Black

That’s the best one:) Thank you for reading and adding to the quotes.

Creativity seems to be assigned only to certain types of people, but I believe it exists in everyone. My engineer husband is very creative, but that creativity shows itself very differently than in my writerly self. I love seeing creativity show up in people, and it can happen in anyone at anytime. A year or so ago, I did a lunch-and-learn seminar for my local chamber on creativity. It was a lot of fun! I wrote some posts based on what I taught there. Here’s the link:

I also think creativity is something we can grow and learn. Like any skill it takes time and effort to develop. Thank you for sharing the links, I’ll be checking the posts out:)

    These are great Dan!

    • Dan Black

Glad you enjoyed the quotes. Thank you for reading and sharing.

I love that one by Linus Pauling – “The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.” Too often I think having too many ideas swirling in my head is a bad thing! Evidently, its a good thing, sometimes :)

    • Dan Black

That’s a good one! Having a pile of good ideas can allow us to create and produce (especially when it comes to blog content). Thank you for adding to the topic.

  • Larry Poole

I love the Linus Pauling quote: “The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.” Almost like saying, “if at first you don’t succeed, try again.”

Great list Dan. Thanks for putting this list together.

    • Dan Black

I also really like that one:) Thank you for reading and commenting.

  • Mike Kim

I love the idea of “teacher and pupil” being in the same individual. Creatives are always learning and observing, even if they’re competing with other creatives!

As a musician and artist, I grew up in a competitive environment i.e. recitals, shows, etc. But my personality always veered towards cooperation. I’m thankful that on the online world, collaboration seems much more at the forefront. Thanks for adding to that, Dan.

    • Dan Black

      Hello Mike,

I totally agree about creatives always learning, that’s one way that a person can become more creative. Thank you for sharing:)

  • Ryan Bonaparte

Great quotes! I think my favorites are Albert von Szent-Gyorgy and Leo Burnett. Creativity really isn’t this mystical thing. It’s when we take the time to look around us and look at what we and others do and deciding that there’s another way. I love telling people that creativity isn’t only for the “creatives” such as artists, musicians, etc. Creativity can take many forms, my favorite example is when I rearrange my kitchen in creative ways to better suit my needs. It’s about adapting ideas to solve problems.

    • Dan Black

Thanks man:) I totally agree, anyone can increase their creativity, like any other skill. It takes time and energy to develop. But it’s defiantly worth it. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Wonderful quotes! Love the one from James Bertrand. Tradition can be wonderful but it can also hinder us from growth.

    • Dan Black

That’s a good one. Thank you for reading them and sharing your thoughts.

  • Ludvig Sunström

    Nice quotes Dan.

My own opinion about creativity is that:
    1. It consists of synthesizing different information and coming up with new ideas.
    2. It can be practiced slowly.

    • Dan Black

Thank you, Ludvig:) Great points. Glad to hear from you.

  • Barb Raveling

I love the quotes by Leo Burnett and Thomas Edison. I used to think I wasn’t a creative person because I wasn’t artsy – but I’m beginning to realize there are many different types of creative – I’m just not an artsy type. :)

    • Dan Black

Good point about being different types of creativity. That’s a great point! Thank you for reading and commenting.

  • Vishnu

Love the Edison quote – there is a better way to do it, find it! True for business, life, leadership and personal growth. If we continue seek to improve and find better ways of living life and doing our work, we can’t help but get better at it.

Creativity needs to be embraced more in this world, Dan, so I’m glad you shared these quotes. Creativity is often shunned upon or dismissed in favor of conformity, the bottom line or simply because of custom/tradition. As Bertrand points out too, we can only allow the future to unfold, if we let go of the traditional modes of thinking.

    • Dan Black

Great points about personal growth. I agree, creativity is something everyone should embrace, of course it will look different depending on the persons work, dreams, and passions. Thank you for taking the time to read and add to the discussion.

  • Mary Stephenson

    Hi Dan

Liked the quotes and especially the one from George Kneller.
I think we should always try to create. It is a contribution to the world. Hey, if nothing else create harmony and happiness around others.

    • Dan Black

Hello Mary. I totally agree with you about always creating. Thank you for taking the time to read these quotes.

“The essential part of creativity is not being afraid to fail.” ~Edwin Land

I love this quote! I’m trying to instill in my students that it’s okay to fail, as long as we’re trying new things to introduce others to Jesus. Because of this mindset, we’ve tried new things this semester we’ve never done before – got a lot more creative. Some of it worked, some didn’t. But since it’s okay to fail, they are still thinking up new ideas. It’s a freeing experience when you aren’t afraid to fail.

    • Dan Black

That’s great Jason! Trying and learning through our failures is important. Keep doing amazing work!

  • Loren Pinilis

The Albert von Szent-Gyorgy quote was my favorite. That’s a great way of framing creativity.

    • Dan Black

That’s a great one. Thank you for reading and sharing.

  • Chris Bailey

Edison’s quote probably connected with me the most from all of the items on the list, especially since it seems like it would almost always be true! Thanks for putting this together Dan!

    • Dan Black

Glad you enjoyed the quotes. That’s a good one.

  • Dave Arnold

Great quotes, Dan. I love your collection of quotes.

    • Dan Black

Thanks man:) Glad you enjoyed them.

  • Steve

I liked the quote “The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.” ~Linus Pauling. That’s the way I look at ideas. Just keep on making them and eventually you’ll find one that really works. I guess I look at creativity as a numbers game.

    • Dan Black

That’s a great one. Yes, I agree, it’s small ideas can lead to large ones.
