How to Become a Leadership Expert

The reason you should become a leadership expert is because it allows you to have and raise your influence level. In the post Everyone Can Influence Someone Today we discussed some areas anyone can begin to gain or increase influence within. This post provides practical ways anyone can become a leadership expert.

An expert is defined as a “person who has extensive skill or knowledge in a particular filed.” Below are four experts who have successfully created a personal brand and platform:

  • John Maxwell– Has been teaching leadership for over 40 years and is an international known speaker and author.
  • Michael Hyatt– Started blogging and built a thriving and successful online platform.
  • Ken Blanchard– Wrote The One Minute Manager in 1982 (It’s still in print) and since been writing and speaking on the topic of business, management, and leadership.
  • Brendon Burchard– He is a social media and marketing expert who helps people create income online.

One important aspect we can learn from these people and need to understand when it comes to becoming a leadership expert is time. It takes time (years) to move into expert status. It does not happen overnight but in the daily choice to lead and influence the people around you. Below are 4 practical ways to become a leadership expert:

1. The Desire- The first step is to have a desire to become a person of influence. We are drawn to our hearts desires and your desire to lead will cause you to step into leadership positions and eventually allow you to become an expert. It all starts with your desire to influence and add value.

2. Know Self- A key element to becoming a leadership expert is knowing yourself. This includes your personal purpose, strengths, passions, all while understanding and controlling your emotional state, areas of weakness, and temperament. To effectively lead others and become an expert a leadership expert requires knowing and leading yourself well.

3. Knowledge and learning- A person needs to grow themselves so they can gain knowledge and learn the skills that will allow them to become an expert. The best way a person can do this is by having an active personal growth plan. A person or leader who is growing and learning will be moving toward their potential.

4. Experience- Gaining experience is an essential aspect to becoming a leadership expert. A person does not need a leadership title to begin to influence the people around them. Anyone can practice and implement leadership skills into their everyday life, while at work, home, or in relationships.

If overtime you apply these 4 areas into your life you will become a leadership expert.

    The personal growth plan is a must. I would also ad practical experience is a must. Leadership is about relationships and experiencing life events with the people you lead. The ups, the downs, the promotions, the demotions, the coming and the going.

    Those personal experiences are key to growing as a leader. They build your confidence and give you credibility with others. I will never forget the times I have cried with my Soldiers and the times I have laughed with them. I will also never forget the difficult decisions I made that affected their careers. In the end, it has all contributed to making me a better leader.

  2. Often times, people become leaders without even trying. They simply stand by their beliefs, do things their own way, and help people as best they can.

    Then a funny thing starts to happen . . .

    They begin to attract followers.

    We’re drawn to those who show conviction. We admire men and women with the strength to fight for their cause.

    So I’d add that an important part of becoming a great leader, if not *the* most important part, is having a cause worth fighting for. A calling. A purpose.

    Find your cause. Live it with passion. And people will follow.


    • Trevor, I was trying to recruit some volunteers at church a few weeks ago for kid’s ministry. Instead of pleading with them, I only mentioned the brightest spots and then pulled some Marines psychology on them and said I doubted any of them had what it took to join us. What do you know, the next week we had 3 new people wanting to prove me wrong. Did that make me a leader? :-)

      • I’d hazard a guess that great leaders know and understand people. Human psychology is certainly something that leaders understand. So I’m going to say “yes,” being able to use psychology on behalf of your cause makes you a leader. Now, being able to keep those kids aligned with your cause, and even spreading it themselves, would make you a great leader.


  3. All good points. I think the one way to become a true leader is by serving others from the ground up. Just that desire to serve I think will set a great leader apart from the ego centered ones. I’m not saying that is the path I took in business, but wish someone would have pointed that out to me along the way. I know you’ve touched on it many times, Dan… I’m just reiterating!

  4. I’m not sure that I’m really concerned about being a leadership expert per se, but I do want to be a good leader. For that, I try to read a lot of material and think deeply about ways I could constantly improve.

  5. Interesting topic, Dan, and I agree with all your points. I think I’d add the need to develop your communications skills – great leaders are great communicators – you need to be able to articulate your vision with clarity and passion. But, bearing in mind that communication’s a two-way street, you’ve also got to be a good listener.

  6. Leadership is about people. I improve my leadership skills by intentionally improving my people skills, i.e. consistent and time communication, support, etc…I still have the One Minute Manager in my library. It’s a timeless classic.

  7. Hanging out with other leaders, kindred-spirits, mentors. Learning from those who are ahead of us, gaining encouragement from those that have same passions as we do, i think, can grow us and help us become experts

  8. Other steps to becoming a Leadership expert is to fail. Keep doing and keep failing and correct the errors as you go along. Its what I am doing now, as I continue to fail I learn so much more.

    Mmm… Desire to influence :) It makes me think. Sometimes I feel it’s not desire within, but as if someone add value and build their success, people naturally follows them. However we can’t miss the fact that their are folks who would love to influence, and I see lack of patience sometimes Dan. May be it’s the World I’ve seen yet 😉

    Knowing about self is critical Dan :) Actually strengths and weaknesses. I can recall that we talk about pride here last time and lack of knowledge about ourselves can lead to a dead end unwittingly. 😉

    Experts are always attracted to knowledge and learning and find each experiences as treasures in their life, yet others find experience is number of years worked in a specific position or something to show off. However I’d like to go beyond and say apply what you already know Dan. How much do we read, but yet we just read and read on :)

    I’ll add 3 basics here ~ Being a good listener, transparency and following ethics :)

      Great additional insights my friend:) I have seen people who desire and who do not desire to lead/influence other people. So if we want to influence it starts with the desire to lead others.

      I think knowing self is one of the most important aspects to leading well and being successful.

    I love the topic of Leadership and love studying great leaders. Your 4 points are essential and a great summary. I also think an understanding of other people is essential. I think good leaders lift people up and help them to become greater. My favorite leader in current times is Richard Branson.

  13. Thanks for this post. I agree that these 4 areas are critical to becoming a leader. I also think that having a passion for others is key. if you don’t care about the people in which you are leading, you will neve be a leader.
