[See how you can win a copy of this book at the end of the post.]

If you want to read a book that will change your perspective on leadership then you should read I Am A Follower by Leonard Sweet. The author challenges the read to “quit defining yourself as a leader, to stop aspiring after leadership, and instead set your sites on being a “Jesus follower” or “fellow follower.” Christians should focus on being a follower and discipline of Jesus over being a leader. This requires submitting under God’s authority and being lead by Him. This book talks about how a Christian can become a better Christ follower.

The book has three main sections: the way, the truth, and the life. The author shares a description of each of these areas:

“To follow Jesus is to be in the right mission – the way: missional living.”

“To follow Jesus is to be in the right relationships – the truth: relational living.”

“To follow Jesus is to be in the right future – the life: incarnational living.”

Leonard Sweet provides practical applications, insightful illustrations, and a biblical explanation of the topic of followership. I believe if you read this book you will discover how to better be a follower of Jesus Christ and know what it really means to be a leader.

[I’m giving away 1 copy of I Am A follower, if you want a chance to win the book then Tweet this and leave a comment below. I will randomly pick and notify the winner on Saturday August 11th.]

Question: How can becoming a better Christ follower cause you to be a better leader?

Jesus never really identified himself as a leader. He was constant following his Father. When we learn to follow like Jesus did, we will become better leaders.

So true Jason. Thank you for reading and sharing.

Can’t tweet but can comment. I like his idea of not aspiring to leadership be a follower.

      Bill,
I understand about you not Tweeting, your still in the contest:) Thank you for reading.

I think following Christ will naturally make one a leader. People are drawn to the power of God in others. I think it is a gift from God that we need to consider a little more seriously than we do…

Just signed up for twitter and the one follower I have already follows you! Ngina helped me get it signed up!

I agree with that Floyd. Great point!

It’s great she helped you out. I think you will enjoy being on, once you learn how to use it.

Very interesting. I like the premise and would definitely LOVE to read it. Leadership and Jesus…what could be better than that combination!?!

It’s a good read. Your in the contest. Two great areas.

Following Christ points others to Him and not us. I think that’s crucial for us leaders.

    • http://danblackonleadership.com/ Dan Black

      Amen to that!

Sounds like an interesting book Dan.

I can see arguments for and against his point of view. But I see it as you’re always leading someone. There’s that kid that’s watching you, the coworker who follows your every move, or your spouse who comes under your leadership.

The book sounds like it would be an excellent read, if for nothing else, to get another’s viewpoint on the subject.

Joe, it’s a good read. I do have to say that I did not agree with some of his viewpoints, but it was good to read them. Thank you for sharing.

I believe that learning how to be a good follower will help you to identify as a leader what a follower should be. I’ve always believed that the best leaders are those who were followers and still follow.

I totally agree with you Juan Cruz. Thank you for reading and sharing.

I am going to have to add this to my list – I have read a couple of Sweets books and heard him speak and have been challenged by him.

      Jim,

It’s a good one. I plan on reading more of his books. Which ones have you read? Would you recommend them?

One was Soul Salsa and I cannot for the life of me think of the other that I really liked – it in my study and I am at home….
